Historical Question(s) of the Day

Does Cheney's shooting his friend in the face make teaching Aaron Burr's assassination of Alexander Hamilton more relatable to students these days? And who should play Burr in the movie of his life?

I would say it's not really analogous; didn't Hamilton and Burr actually agree to a duel? The Cheney incident was clearly an accident. I can't tell you how many 80 year old men I've mistaken for a foot-high flightless* bird, especially when I'm wasted.

However, since the President has now taken to comparing the Iraq War to the American War for Independence, where the insurgents won, it is apparently okay now to make completely lame analogies. Hope this was helpful.

* They can flap up into the air a few feet to escape predators, but they don't really "fly."

So maybe "assassination" is not the right word. He just shot him.

If you haven't read the book you would probably like Founding Brothers by Ellis....it has a cool description of the hamilton and burr duel that you could pass out. It is for a lay audience, but they might get a kick out of it and it is rather short. It goes over whether Burr really meant to kill him etc. My favorite part is that there was a hidden switch on the pistols that would made them almost useless if you did not know where the switch was...nice touch, now that is political hardball!!! makes the swiftboats seem rather tame.

Your students might point out the similarities and differences between the two incidents. As to who could play Burr... hmmm... John Voit?

only if Cheney were actually sentenced for it, thus getting rid of both of them. All hail president Pelosi!

Who should portray Aaron Burr in the movie?

Sean Whalen, for obvious reasons.

Trivia: Michael Bay directed that commercial.

If you want to get the kids interested in politics you should have them watch Obama girl and Hott4Hill. At least the boys will be interested:) I would have loved to be in the room when Hillary and Bill watched the video (I'm guessing bill is still watching). I also am curious to see if the campaigns are happy or upset with these videos. I assume happy...edwards must feel left out.

As far as actors go, Mel Gibson can bring the appropriate crazy factor to the role
