Go Ducks Go!

This might be the coolest thing ever:

In our neighborhood, we have a small duck pond, populated usually by about a dozen or fewer ducks. This pond is on the way to the kids' school, less than a half-mile from our house, and only about a block from the school. In fact, some of the ducks have wandered up toward the school to explore the little fenced-off wetland next door.

Well, for the past few weeks, we've spotted two particular ducks, a male and a female, who seemed to have taken up residence right outside the school's fence. They saunter around and don't seem overly concerned if you're walking near them. Pretty laid-back ducks.

At the end of last week, the kids were abuzz. Turns out, this duck couple has settled down and decided to nest. IN THE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND!!! They waddle around the playground while the kids are playing all around them. Totally unconcerned.

They've built their nest in the flower bed right below the window to DQ's classroom. There are at least 4 eggs in there already, and the mama duck was laying again this morning.

I think I'm more excited about this than the kids.

You've got about 22 - 30 days before they hatch... then there will be a parade back to the pond. The teacher should read "Make Way for Ducklings" to the class. :)

(I grew up 2 blocks from Commonwealth Park - a pair of mallards nested across the street every spring for years, and would come to our yard and eat all the slugs. We stopped traffic for the ducklings a few times over the years)

Make sure to keep your kids a safe distance from the newly hatched ducklings. Otherwise the little fluffballs will imprint on them and follow them around. Makes for a cute picture, but a messy house.
